hashtag

McDonalds recently learnt the hard way that you need to be careful with the use of hashtags when twitter users exacted revenge for all the dodgy burgers they'd eaten. The idea, created by McDonalds social media director Rick Wion involved posting heart-felt stories from farmers, talking about the fresh produce McDonalds uses, with the hashtags #meetthefarmers and #McDStories

"When u make something with pride, people can taste it," McD potato supplier.
Twitter users immediately jumped at the chance to post their horror stories using the hashtag.
Some examples:
@MuzzaFuzza said "I haven't been to McDonalds in years, because I'd rather eat my own diarrhea. #McDStories
The Daily Mail grabbed these screenshots:

So what is the lesson we can all learn from this? Remember to explore all possible consequences before running with a ‘good’ idea on Twitter. In McDonalds defence, the whole campaign only lasted for two hours before they pulled the whole thing - at least they had the guts to pull it before it went overboard.
